The name Unagusta (pronounced: yoo-nah-GUS-tah), comes from a now defunct furniture factory in Hazelwood, NC. The name “Unagusta” appears to be a reference to Chief Yonaguska, (1759-1839) one of the last great chiefs of the nearby Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
The English translation of Yonaguska’s name is “Drowning Bear”. How the furniture company misspelled his name is a mystery.
